Goldfish - how to keep her alive.

Buying a goldfish - piece of cake, keeping her healthy and sound - totally different story.

Things to keep in mind before bringing her home:
Tank size matters. Minimum of 15 to 20 litres tank is advisable, so that she gets enough space to roam around.
Tank should be clean. Free from any chemicals which could harm her like excess salts, detergent residues etc.
Should be covered.
Tank should have proper lighting system. A small bulb would suffice.
Air pump and water heater are equally important.
Many varieties of air pump are available but I used the one with water filtering ability. It sucks the tank water from beneath through a filter so that tiny dust particles (even fish poop) get stuck, and expels from top with force and external air mixed. This also helps in circulating water.
Heater should be set around 26 to 28 C.
Either of the above should not be turned on outside water.
Water - tap water:filtered water = 1:1
If tap water is supplied from municipal tanks, then anti-chlorine tablets would be required.
Fill the tank atleast 5 cm below the brim.
Put a plastic plant, stone with a hole, an artifact, or anything of your choice which has a cavity or behind which, the fish can hide. This is important because, they will remain under stress if they dont find any hiding place, which might result in reduced activity and eventually death.
Pebbles at the bottom are good. They serve dual purpose. They make your tank look good as well as keep the debris out of fish's reach.

Now the tank is ready to be inhabited.

Forget relaxing. Maintaining the tank is a tedious job.
Eat-swim-poop-swim-eat-swim. This is pretty much their routine. So as you keep your house clean, you need to keep the tank clean as well. (Because fish can't)
Ideally fish should be fed once in 24 hrs. But i divide that in 5 equal amount.
To avoid over stuffing their belly.
Keep an eye on the transparency of water. In my case, I need to clean the tank every 2 days.
Buy a siphon vacuum.
Helps in cleaning tank without transferring the fish to a bucket.
At a time, only 50% of water should be removed and replaced with fresh water immediately.

Clean the air filter once a week.

Thats pretty much the basics of "how to keep a gold fish smiling".

Above mentioned facts may or may not apply to all. So consult your nearest aquarium expert.

Having a goldfish maybe a tedious job, but is fun too. It makes you happy to observe them exploring a tiny place and enjoy swmining towards the air flow, diving to the bottom and coming up and fighting for food.

This is something which we don’t usually get to hear. Not when it comes to our close ones. They say think in a limit. But I don’t agree with them. I believe in thinking big. This is what makes you think broadly and get into the depth of every detail. Thinking big does not imply to a particular stuff. But you need to think where and when to use it.
